Epileptic seizures can take a wide variety of forms but are broadly divided into generalised, focal or partial seizures. Generalised seizures involve the entire body & consciousness is lost. In this case, the abnormal discharges involve the entire brain as shown below .
Focal seizures involve only a part of the body; such as only a leg, upper limb etc. The abnormal discharges in this case involve only the part of the brain associated with that particular part i.e. if only the leg is involved then the abnormal discharges must be involving the part of the brain representing the leg. These seizures can become generalised later due to the spread of discharge to the rest of the brain.
