Can the oral contraceptive pills be taken simultaneously with an anti epileptic medication ?

Yes. But the anti epileptic medication can decrease the effect of the pills & can lead to a failure of contraception. You will require a pill with a higher dose of estrogen & better still is an additional method of contraception.

Do seizures during pregnancy harm the fetus ?
Minor seizures probably do not harm. However major seizures episodes can harm the unborn baby.

Can the anti epilepsy drugs harm the fetus ?
Yes; most of the anti epilepsy drugs can cause malformations of the fetus. Many of them cause neural tube defects like spina bifida. Hence always inform your Doctor about pregnancy when on anti epilleptic medications.

What can be done to minimize the above complication ?
Folic acid supplements can decrease the risk of these defects considerably. Your Doctor may also do some changes in your drugs.

Is it safe to breast feed the baby while on anti epilelptics ?
Some amount of anti epileptic drug does reach the baby through breast milk. But, it is still beneficial to breast feed the baby.
