What is Mesial Temporal Sclerosis ?

Mesial Temporal Sclerosis is the scarring of the hippocampal formation in the medial temporal lobe.

What causes Mesial Temporal Sclerosis ?

It is generally caused in the developing & vulnerable brain due to --

  • Infections
  • Trauma
  • febrile seizures (seizures occuring during fever due to other causes- common in children)

A latent interval follows, before seizures develop due to above causes. The seizures generally start in childhood or adolescence.

How is MTS diagnosed?

MTS is suspected whenever a patient has a complex partial type of seizure. This can be confirmed on a MRI. Here is a MRI showing mesial temporal sclerosis.

What type of seizures are caused by Mesial Temporal Sclerosis ?

Mesial Temporal Sclerosis generally causes Complex Partial seizures.

What is the treatment for Mesial Temporal Sclerosis ?

Mesial temporal sclerosis is curable. The abnormal area can be removed surgically.
