What
is Epilepsy ?
Epilepsy
is a condition in which a person suffers from repeated seizures (fits).
What
is the cause of a seizure ?
The brain
is the control center for the body like a computer of the highest generation.
It is made up of millions of tiny nerve cells or neurons. Each neuron has
an electric voltage difference across its membrane. A seizure occurs when
there is a sudden surge or excess or chaos in the normal electrical activity
in groups of neurons (called the seizure focus). This abnormal electric
discharge spreads to the rest of the brain & soon there is total disruption
of the normal function of the brain.
This abnormal activity could be restricted to a small part of the brain
leading to focal seizure (seizure involving only a small part of the body)
or could be generalised i.e. the entire body is involved.
How
does a seizure manifest ?
Many patients
do have a peculiar strange feeling before the occurance of a seizure.
The seizure could consist of fall with generalised convulsive movement
of all the limbs. These movements could also be restricted to a few muscles
only.
Some patients might just keep staring or show some characteristic movements
like lip smacking etc.
some might just be unresponsive for a few minutes.
