What
does EEG stand for ?
EEG satnds for Electroencephalogram.
How
is EEG useful ?
As was already discussed the neurons in the brain are charged
& information is passed between them in the form of electrical currents.
EEG is a record of these currents. It picks up any abnormal currents produced
by neurons. This helps by helping to localise the abnormal set of neurons.
How
is an EEG recorded ?
EEG is recoreded with the help of leads placed on the scalp. A routine
EEG takes about 30 minutes during which the patient is resting but awake.
This is followed by EEG during overbreathing for 2-3 minutes & EEG
during photic stimulation(pt exposed to flashing light).
Does
a normal EEG rule out Epilepsy ?
NO. EEG is often normal in patiets of epilepsy. Since it is commonly done
when there is no seizure; it can be normal & yet the patient has epilepsy.
What
is ambulatory EEG ?
Recording electrodes are attached to the scalp, the wiring being scarcly
visible under the normal hair. A portable recorder is worn on a belt.
Since the patient wears the EEG leads, a 24 hour recording is possible.
The recording during a seizure episode can be better studied. Thus it
tries to overcome the drawback of the routine EEG .
What
is Video EEG ?
The patient wears the EEG leads & is confined to a video EEG room
& asked to remain within the camera range. A split screen gives the
simultaneous view of the patient & the EEG. Thus the abnormal dischrges
in the brain (recorded by EEG) can be correlated with the abnormal movements
of the patient during the seizure.
